HTTP Status Error

HTTP 503 Service Unavailable

The server is currently unable to handle the incoming request due to temporary overloading or scheduled maintenance.

What This Error Means

A 503 Service Unavailable means the server is reachable and running, but currently incapable of processing the request because its worker pool, queue, or database connection limits are saturated.

Why It Occurs

Sudden traffic surge exceeding maximum worker threads or connection pools.

Backend database connection pool exhausted (max_connections reached).

Web server is running in maintenance mode.

Symptoms

  • ⚠ Users receive 503 error during peak hours or traffic spikes
  • ⚠ Nginx logs show "Resource temporarily unavailable" or "503 Service Temporarily Unavailable"
  • ⚠ High server load average and CPU throttling

Common Causes

  • • Database connection pool starvation (PostgreSQL / MySQL connection limit reached)
  • • Web server max worker connections (worker_connections in Nginx) reached
  • • Upstream service queue backlog is completely full
  • • Maintenance mode file (e.g. storage/framework/down) left active

How to Fix It

  1. Check system load and running processes: top or htop
  2. Increase database connection pool size or deploy connection pooler like PgBouncer
  3. Increase worker processes and connection limits in web server configuration
  4. Implement HTTP caching at the Cloudflare edge to absorb static and read traffic
CommandPurpose
uptimeCheck system load average
ss -tn state established | wc -lCount active TCP connections
tail -n 50 /var/log/nginx/error.logInspect web server error log

Verification

  • ✓ Monitor error rate in analytics after scaling worker pool
  • ✓ Stress test with ApacheBench or k6 to ensure stability under expected peak load

Prevention

  • → Use horizontal autoscaling for backend worker instances
  • → Place high-read endpoints behind Cloudflare edge cache or Redis cache
